News - The Centenary of Guiding in Ferriby District

Everyone in guiding started the Centenary year with a launch party on the 5/6 September. Our Division had theirs at Paxwold. A day of activities for the brownies and rainbows started with a presentation of guiding then and now. The girls then had a chance to try circus skills, do African singing and dancing, try activities that brownies used to do and wear old uniforms, use lots of glue and glitter to make a giant jigsaw to represent their hopes for the future and make junk materials into useful items such as plant pots and draft excluders. Birthday cake, jelly and ice-cream and a campfire finished their day.

The guides then arrived for a disco of music through the ages- they tried them all from the Charleston to the jive, with pampering sessions, a juice cocktail bar and supper of pizza and then a sleepover before more challenges after breakfast.

The centenary badge is challenging us to have fun trying new experiences, learning new skills and helping others as we always do. The 100 ideas to choose from range from the daunting such as parascending, to the tasty such as creating a recipe with dark ingredients, to the informative such as finding out about the problems polar animals are having due to global warming , to the creative such as doing a puppet show, to sheer fun like jumping as high as you can on apcehoppers or trying out leapfrog.

There are special activities planned for the whole county to take part in. The rainbows "Go wild" with a day of jungle activites. Our guides are going on "The sail of the Century" in March filling a ferry to Holland to visit units there. Our brownies go to"The Big Brownie Takeover" in July- a giant beach party at Bridlington sands below the Spa. The senior section and Trefoil Guild have their own events. The final event of the year will be the "Big Promise" at 20.10 on 20th October

Guiding is fun, inspiring, fulfilling for both girls and leaders with lots of different activities packed into each meeting to try and help the girls develop as citizens, able to work in a team, respecting each others abilities andmeeting the challenge of new experiences, To continue into our second century we need new volunteers ready to take over leading our units when we retire and also to be able to open a rainbow unit. Can you give some time to guiding? Or would you like to do guiding activities for adults with the Trefoil Guild? Our Thinking Day event on 22nd February will be at Ferriby Methodist Church all are welcome.

We are also planning a Quiz Night in the British Legion to raise money to pay for some expensive drain repairs to the Brownie/Guide hut. Further details will posted on Ferriby Diary.
