North Ferriby Parish Council
Riverside Walkway

Riverside Walkway is a public amenity with areas that locals and visitors alike can enjoy. The walkway has a 1,000 metre frontage of the Humber with spectacular views of the countryside all round. The Trans Pennine Trail and the Wolds Way both cross on the way to the Mersey and Filey. 3,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, seats and paths created. It is a far cry from when it was a waste landfill site up until 1981 and left abandoned until the Parish Council became the owners in late 1986 and at the same time purchased the Reed Pond

Some work has to be carried out occasionally to keep it free from too much reed growth and to create habitats for wild life. Ings Fields are adjacent to the Reed Pond on the west side and are privately owned and there is no public right of way over them. The fields are subject to a management agreement with the local authority and the owner to protect the flora, and fauna, in particular, the rare sedge carex divisa (its continuation encouraged by allowing saline water from the reed pond to permeate Ings Fields).

Riverside Walkway Project Report
Visitors to the area in recent weeks will have observed work on the new woodland path to allow access for less mobile visitors, with or without wheelchairs, which should be completed by the end of February. The work is being co-ordinated with BTCV and the Walkway Committee and financed with a Big Lottery BBC Breathing Spaces Grant. See Pictures

The majority of the hard working volunteers are from outside the village. They are in great contrast to the Ferriby and Hessle young people who in the early hours of Saturday morning on 10th November 2007 lit a bonfire on top of the "Boat Pavement" - a memorial to Ted Wright who discovered the Bronze Age boats on our foreshore. Two information boards were destroyed and one of the flagpoles was damaged. Restoration will incur considerable costs. Police were called to this act of vandalism, which was witnessed by a Ferriby resident. Further action by the police is awaited.
